The course I taught in TECH high school is Basic Chinese, but the students in the class had been in Chinese immersion classes when they were in elementary school, so they had learned something about Chinese. Therefore, I have higher requirements for them than to the ordinary Chinese classes, not only requiring them to read Chinese passages, but also to write Chinese characters. Yesterday we had completed the learning of some Chinese vocabulary, today we begin to do dictation. I found that the results are pretty good. They can write most of the Pinyin and Chinese characters correctly, which indicates that they spent time on reviewing after school. In the following weeks, I will request them to do more practice on writing.
Thanksgiving is coming. In order to help help students better integrate the American culture into Chinese language learning, I set an assignment for the students to complete, which is to make a presentation on the way of Thanksgiving celebration, the history of Thanksgiving and traditional food for it. Duorui, Ruolan and Zhouzhou worked together to give a Thanksgiving presentation. After that, I gave students some key words about Thanksgiving in Chinese written on the blackboard for students to remember. I translated what they have said in Chinese after the presentation.
Today is a special day. Mr. Hong Lei is visiting our Confucius Institute. He is now the Consul General of the Chinese Consulate General in Chicago, who was a spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry. Hong Lei, who has always seen on TV, speaks on behalf of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, known as is a very talented diplomat. I feel very honored to be able to get close contact with him today.
Today, we started the first calligraphy class. I gave Duo Rui, Zhou Zhou and Ruolan, a brush and a piece of calligraphy paper respectively, and played the Chinese classical music as background music. Zhou Zhou is an artist, very good at painting, and also very talented in calligraphy. Duo Rui practiced very hard. Ru
olan has a good memory. She can be very accurate in writing Chinese character strokes.
In this week, I gave my students in Tech a quiz, which is mainly focused on the first three lessons. The students in Tech did it very well. From the quiz, I can tell that their mastery on pinyin and some Chinese characters is fine. But the problem for them is the tone, I will give them more practice on tone in the forthcoming weeks.
